  • Local Lighting Regulations During Nesting Season

Sea Turtle Nesting Season will continue until October 31st. Female turtles lay their eggs in the sand during this time, and the baby turtles will hatch two months later. Lights adjacent to the beach confuse the baby turtles and lead them to their death instead of to their home in the ocean. It is important to continue to comply with local lighting regulations and keep your balcony and porch lights turned off during nesting season! Reminders during this Season (May 1 - October 31, Sunset to Sunrise): 1. NO LIGHT SOURCE FROM ANY PART OF YOUR PROPERTY SHALL BE VISIBLE TO A PERSON STANDING ON ANY PART OF THE BEACH. This includes recreational, decorative, dune crosswalk, and interior lighting, regardless of light color. 2. NO LIGHT FROM ANY PART OF YOUR PROPERTY SHALL ILLUMINATE ANY PART OF THE BEACH, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY (reflected). This includes recreational, decorative, dune crosswalk, and interior lighting, regardless of light color. 3. NO REFLECTIVE SURFACE OF A FIXTURE SHALL BE VISIBLE TO A PERSON STANDING ON THE BEACH. Thank you for helping to protect our nesting sea turtles! For more regulations, information, and ways to help: www.volusiaseaturtles.org
